Thanksgiving Fun!!!

Well.... You know me and how TERRIBLY mean I am.......  So today we ACTUALLY DID SOME WORK?!?!?!?!!?!?

I DID at least tell you things I am thankful for...... and we added to this throughout the day (It got a little silly in here) 

 

We DID have a set of Daily Questions though!!!

Then went through the last part of the first section - Transferring Energy and ATP synthase


THEN...... I gave you my Thanksgiving blessings through some videos.....  THIS is where things got fun!!

 

And... whatever other fun videos we could find.

Energy of Life Intro

We finished up the Cell Membrane and Transport chapter last week, had our exam on Wednesday. 
 Thursday you had a chance to look over your exams, see what you missed and decide whether you want to retake it.  REMEMBER:  YOU CAN RETAKE ANYTHING!!!!!!!  PLEASE take advantage of these opportunities I give you to increase your grade.  Yes this is a tough class but you ALL are CAPABLE!!!

You then started into the introduction bookwork and we started to go over that today.

We went through your directed reading by walking through the book pages you read.  Here were the book pages and areas that you should have down on your directed reading.

 

 

We will start into some basics of photosynthesis tomorrow - but as an introduction we watched the following crash course.

Egg Lab Wrap Up and Active Transport

Monday I showed you the following video to remind you of what we did last week.

You then completed a data analysis on the egg lab and took our daily question quiz. 

Today we talked through osmosis a bit more and flew through the notes on active transport.  I did print these out for you this time in order to save time. 

Egg Lab Day 4

NO DQ2 today.... I decided that we needed to just get the Egg lab wrapped up - We will take that on MONDAY.
TODAY was the best day of ALL!!!!!
Well... we started with daily questions (not THAT fun I guess)

THEN:  We took a look at the eggs from yesterday!!!!

You can see that OBVIOUSLY water
moved INTO the egg (by Osmosis) AS did
the food coloring.  This means that the
membrane was permeable to BOTH of these!

I encouraged you to have some fun with
it!!  The egg was SLIGHTLY bouncy!!

THEN came the final resting place

 NORMALLY - My motto is "Friends don't let friends take Selfies.... But I made an exception today....

While those are fun..... Here is a little more detail on the MOLECULAR part of what happened between yesterday and today!!

Egg Lab Day 3

No Daily Questions today - I had you jot down a couple slides that help show what did and didn't happen so far with our Eggs:

 Now to our EGGS!!!

We took them out of the corn syrup and observed that they were VERY "deflated" and flimsy.  We discussed this was because the water that had diffused INTO the egg yesterday diffused back OUT of the egg in order to maintain a constant water balance inside and outside of the cell.  The Corn Syrup (a very concentrated Sugar solution) could NOT pass through the membrane.  In OUR cells sugars move through specific transport proteins.  These are not present in the eggs membrane.



As you can see it is VERY flimsy and deflated because
water moved from inside the egg back out.

We know this because there is much more solution left in the beaker than we put in yesterday:

Yesterday we added 75mL of Corn Syrup.  Today there was approximately 100mL of solution

After making our observations we placed our eggs into 100ml of water and just for fun I let you add food coloring to see what happens!!!

Here is What happened at a molecular level today!

Egg Lab Day 2

To start the period off we went through the following Daily Questions:

We moved our Eggs out of the vinegar...... Took the rest of the shell off and placed it into corn syrup.

What we were able to see today was the movement of the water in vinegar INTO the egg.  In the mean time the acetic acid was able to break apart the shell and leave us just with the cell membrane.

Only ONE Casualty!!!!

Lab Set Up:
Today you got to know your egg, weighed your egg, NAMED your egg and placed it into 100ml of Vinegar.  In the meant time I had you create the following chart for this lab.
