Nondisjunction

Wednesday February 27th
For each cell that goes through meiosis in a male, how many will become sperm? (Spermatogenesis)
All four will become sperm
In females how many will become eggs? (Oogenesis)
Only one will become an egg - the other three are known as polar bodies and will die off.

After fertilization, what process will the zygote now go through? Mitosis and differentiation

Mitosis and meiosis are processes by which animal and plant cells divide.  Which statement best describes a difference between mitosis and meiosis?
A.  Meiosis is a multi-step process. (Both mitosis AND meiosis are multi step)
B.  Mitosis occurs only in eukaryotic cells (Both Mitosis and Meiosis only occur in eukaryotic cells)
C.  Meiosis is used in the repair of an organism.(MITOSIS is used in the repair of an organism)
**D.  Mitosis produces genetically identical daughter cells**.

To wrap up yesterdays discussion on the formation of twins, we watched the following podcasts detailing them a bit more.
Then we moved on to nondisjunction which is what yesterday's activity was leading up to.  Here were the notes that we took today.

This led to a discussion a little about what the MEDICAL definition of a hermaphrodite is (NOT what you guys have probably thought) and also a little about tetragametic Chimeras.....  Lots more to come on that!!  I told you this chapter was going to get fun!
