Tuesday October 7th - Density of Water

The daily questions for Tuesday went RIGHT along with Monday's discussion about heat of vaporization:

Of all the properties of water that help support life, waters specific heat/heat of vaporization and heat of fusion are probably the one we can relate to the most.

We moved into the density of water and water a "universal" solvent:
I showed you guys this video that details the different densities of water:

Finally, we finished up the last property important to life.

Thursday and Friday October 1st and 2nd- Daily Question Quiz and Specific Heat of Water / TYLER SIS Login

On Thursday we took our Daily Question quiz due to the shortened periods on Friday.  After the daily question quiz we went through the notes on specific heat.

Friday I had you log in to Tyler SIS to make sure you know how to log in and see your grades.  We will do that again tomorrow.

Today we continued through specific heat.  Here are today's daily questions and the notes from Thursday AND today.

I didn't get a chance to do a screen cast of today's daily question.  This last question is VERY important to understand.  If you were absent today I encourage you to watch the following Khan Academy video that discusses what i was drawing.

Here were notes from Thursday and today.  I have included some videos that I used in some classes.  Again, I encourage you to watch some of these if you were seeing as though this is a tough concept to digest!

Wednesday September 30th - Adhesion and Capillary Action

We have been looking at the properties of water that are important for life.  Yesterday we focussed on cohesion and how it causes surface tension. Here is another look at cohesion and surface tension.
Today we looked at Adhesion and capillary action.  Here were today's Daily Questions:
I used the following image to show you the differences in density among solid, liquid and gas water.

Here is a little video of my discussion about some adhesion that we saw YESTERDAY in class:
Then into the notes and activities:
And we took a look at adhesion and cohesion/surface tension by adding water onto pennies

For a dramatic look at what happened - Check out this youtube clip:

We used capillary tubes to show capillary action:

This is important in moving water up the roots of plants - Here is a neat time lapse video showing how capillary action brings a plant "back to life"

Tuesday September 29th - Wonders of Water Day 2 - Cohesion and Surface Tension

Today we started into the properties of water and how they support life. Today you started with the following warm up.
Screencast of the discussion around this:

We then watched the following "Movie Trailer" for this section.
This was the only slide of notes we took - the rest of the period was SEEING this property of water in action.

Filling up our jars with water

Dropping pennies in to see how many we could add until the water spilled over.

Taking a look at surface tension by balancing pins on the water.

It was a MESSY day in room 220 that's for sure!!

SOME classes got a chance to see the following two clips that show in slow motion the concept of surface tension:
The second video can be found at

Monday September 28th - Properties of Water Day 1

Today we brought together our knowledge of Basic Chemistry to the properties of water.  Here were the daily questions:
We then went into some notes / drawings / activities to understand the chemistry of Water
***NOTE:  I encourage you to watch the following Khan Academy Video if you missed today's discussion / demonstrations:

Then we used our "cups of water" to build 5 water  molecules

And then you diagramed that on your desks!!

Friday September 25th - Basic Chem and Water Intro DQQ - Finish up basic chem notes

BEFORE the daily question quiz I had you watch the following crash course as a nice review / introduction to the properties of water.

We then took our daily question quiz.

AFTER that we did finish up notes on the different types of bonds:

Thursday September 24th - Basics of Chemistry

Reminder:  DAILY QUESTION QUIZ TOMORROW!!!!  (Intro to water and basic chemistry)

Yesterday we had a daily question extravaganza about the properties of water.  While water is CRUCIAL to life and have many "life giving" properties, we need to have a basic understanding of atoms to start.  Today's daily questions were to see what, if anything, you remember about the parts of an atom.  I was encouraged to see that while you may have not remembered it ALL, many of you could talk through some of the parts:

Then on to our first set of notes for this section:
