Cell Membrane Structure and Kidney Demonstration

Today's Daily Questions Came Directly off of Study Island.

We only did number 9 on this screen.
Then we continued with the notes about the cell membrane

Before we moved to the next slide I had you take your "Kidney Cell" that was filled with simulated blood (it contains all the chemical components of our blood but is NOT actually animal blood) and place it in a cup of water.
Kidney Cells in a semi-permeable membrane
By the time you were finished with this slide most of your cups looked something like this.
This was showing you how cell membranes are SEMI permeable.  The membrane allowed urea and salts through
but they did not allow larger molecules such as red blood cells through (otherwise the water would have been red)
What you just made was simulated urine!

Intro to Homeostasis and Cell Transport

We then watched the following video that I stopped at multiple parts to show where we WERE in the cell (in the last chapter) and where we will be focusing on NOW (specifically in the cell membrane)

I paused the movie here to show you that this is the area between cells that is filled with fluid and shows how cells interact with each other via receptors.
I paused it AGAIN to show you that this bilayer is where we will be focusing during this next chapter.
Then Started into the cell Membrane Notes!!

This was a slide from our unit on the "Characteristic of life"  I mentioned how this was an example of a feedback mechanism.

Cell Structure and Function notes quiz, questions and Study Island

Monday You took your open notes quiz on the organelles, turned in the "Organelles Worksheet" and also completes of "Vocabulary Review" To begin to wrap up this section

Tuesday you logged on to Study Island and began the "Cell Structure and Function" assignment.  Remember, I asked that you answer 30 questions, you must score about a 70% in order to move forward in study island.  THIS IS DUE BY FRIDAY MORNING!!!!!!!!!!

Finish up cell structure and function notes

Thursday while I was out you guys got down the rest of the notes in your notebook and today we took a Daily Question quiz and then I went over the notes and had you highlight/underline/etc key parts of them.  Monday we will have an open notes quiz on these so be prepared!!!

More Organelles

REMINDERS!!!!

**Daily Question Quiz Exemption Form Due Friday
Extra Credit Due Friday!!!!!!

Here's what happened today:

I used water balloons then to describe the function of Contractile Vacuoles in both plant cells and protists.

Contractile vacuoles in plants fill with water and provide structure and support to plant cells.
I showed how when there is only a small amount of water the plant will "fall over" or wilt until the contractile vacuole is
filled again with water.

Contractile Vacuoles in protists though help to maintain HOMEOSTASIS by releasing water that builds up.

Notes for Today

Proteins made on either the Rough ER or Free Ribosomes are composed of many amino acids folded on top of each other

Those that are made on the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum will eventually be shipped out of the cell.  The ER puts a small membrane around it.
The Golgi apparatus then puts a membrane around it and it is now called a vesicle.
Membrane Bound Vesicle that will then merge with the cell membrane to export the proteins.

Organelles Cont....

Started with announcements/Reminders:
Remember that Extra Credit and Daily Question Quiz Exemption forms are due by the end of the school day Friday.
***MAKE SURE YOU CHECK EDLINE FOR ANY MISSING ASSIGNMENTS!!!!!!****
Then we got into the daily questions.
With our Directed readings still out - we worked through the back page.

Then finally worked through a couple more slides of notes.

Organelles Directed reading/notes/extra credit/DQQ exemption

Monday October 21st

These were the daily questions and I had you look at your directed reading from last week to help you determine the answers.
We then worked through the front of your directed reading.  I had you underline or circle KEY words/Phrases that I wanted you to understand about each of these parts of a cell.   We will be getting into the details of each in the notes.
Then we started into the notes on this section.
I didn't have you write this one in your notes because we covered what I wanted you to know in the directed reading.

Today I also handed out the extra credit (which is also available on Edline) and discussed the Daily Question Quiz Exemption Form.

As you can see - I have the Exemption Form link circled but you can also see that the extra credit assignment is also available. Please have both of these done by the end of the school day Friday.

Intro to Organelles

We started with the following daily questions and you turned in your Active reading from Yesterday.

Before you plow head first into organelles, I want you to have at least read a little bit about them so you are somewhat familiar with what we are talking about next week.  So the rest of the period you worked through the Directed Reading that corresponds with the next section of this chapter.  We will finish that up tomorrow after the Daily Question Quiz.
