Well........ today was pretty stinky THAT'S for sure!! Before we started into our activity, we went through the following daily questions. The first was a TOTAL "Gimme" - the others could have been managed just by reading through the questions / analyzing the graphs themselves. I encourage you to ALWAYS read through an entire questions and/or look at a graph or chart and ask yourself "What is this question/graph/chart TELLING me?!!?" The last 3 questions could all be answered even with very limited knowledge of enzymes.
and THEN.... came to fun of the catalase lab!! Here is a little collage of some pics from today's lab. I will put a brief overview of our findings in a future post!
Before our lab tomorrow I wanted to make sure that you had a solid grasp on both enzyme structure / function but ALSO how different factors affect enzyme activity. Recall that Enzymes are PROTEINS (PacMan Protein!!), proteins are made up of amino acids, these are held together by peptide bonds, anything that alters the bonds will also alter the shape of the amino acids and subsequently the enzymes themselves...... Blah blah blah blah......... Here are the daily questions - which we talked about IN DETAIL!!! We spent a LOT of time going over WHY the right answers were in fact correct and what made all the wrong answers WRONG.
Then we went through a couple slides about the affects of pH and temperature on enzyme function. Tomorrow we will get to SEE those affects in action!
Today was our first REAL day of covering enzymes. We started with the following Daily Questions:
Then we watched an "Amoeba sisters" video as an introduction. I really like the analogies they make about enzymes and I will be using a lot of the same ones as we go through this section.
Today I had you read an introductory page out of the Keystone Finish Line books about enzymes and then we through these daily questions:
We then went through the Bozeman Biology video on Biological molecules together as a class and made sure to fill in all the sections you may have not gotten to on Friday:
The majority of this period was spent having you go through the daily questions and then our discussion of them. Here's what we had cooking for today!!
I touched one last time on Nucleic Acids and that was it!
Tuesday we made it ALMOST through everything we need for Organic Compounds. We started off as always with Daily Questions:
I reviewed lipids a little more and had you watch two Sci Shows that pertain:
Next we looked over different types of proteins
aaaand - Another Sci Show:
And then finally started into Nucleic Acid Structure / Function:
Wednesday the 10th graders were taking PSATs - soooooooo - You guys got a VERY RARE study hall!!! Back at it tomorrow as we wrap up Organic Compounds :)
The majority of today was spent on daily questions. Since we were missing the 10th graders in some classes, I did not want to get too far ahead! Here they are:
The bottom of your daily questions was just used to show you some examples of the organic compounds that contain Nitrogen!
After that, I let Hank Green tell you a little more about Organic Compounds necessary to life:
We started into the meat of this section on organic macromolecules today. I printed off the daily questions for you today so that you could make all the notes that I did on them! Once I figured out that it is NOT Monday..... we went ahead and did these!!
Next up we went through the notes about the structure and function of Carbohydrates:
Then finally a little wrap up from my boy Hank Green!
