More Organelles

Here's what happened today:


I used water balloons then to describe the function of Contractile Vacuoles in both plant cells and protists.


Contractile vacuoles in plants fill with water and provide structure and support to plant cells.
I showed how when there is only a small amount of water the plant will "fall over" or wilt until the contractile vacuole is
filled again with water.

Contractile Vacuoles in protists though help to maintain HOMEOSTASIS by releasing water that builds up.

Notes for Today


Proteins made on either the Rough ER or Free Ribosomes are composed of many amino acids folded on top of each other
 
Those that are made on the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum will eventually be shipped out of the cell.  The ER puts a small membrane around it. 
The Golgi apparatus then puts a membrane around it and it is now called a vesicle.
Membrane Bound Vesicle that will then merge with the cell membrane to export the proteins.

Organelles Directed reading/notes/extra credit/DQQ exemption

Monday October 21st

These were the daily questions and I had you look at your directed reading from last week to help you determine the answers.
 We then worked through the front of your directed reading.  I had you underline or circle KEY words/Phrases that I wanted you to understand about each of these parts of a cell.   We will be getting into the details of each in the notes.
 Then we started into the notes on this section.
I didn't have you write this one in your notes because we covered what I wanted you to know in the directed reading.


 Today I also handed out the extra credit (which is also available on Edline) and discussed the Daily Question Quiz Exemption Form.

As you can see - I have the Exemption Form link circled but you can also see that the extra credit assignment is also available. Please have both of these done by the end of the school day Friday.

Intro to Organelles

We started with the following daily questions and you turned in your Active reading from Yesterday.

Before you plow head first into organelles, I want you to have at least read a little bit about them so you are somewhat familiar with what we are talking about next week.  So the rest of the period you worked through the Directed Reading that corresponds with the next section of this chapter.  We will finish that up tomorrow after the Daily Question Quiz.

Wrap up of Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic Cells.

We spent a good deal of time today on the two daily questions.  As always, we spent just as much time going over why each of the wrong answers were WRONG as we did finding the correct answers.  Here's what we came up with.
I then had you read trough a passage that summarizes all we have talked about so far in this chapter.  I turned this into a "learning how to learn" activity as I encouraged you to underline, star, highlight, etc the passage as you went to help focus your thoughts.  I did the same as you read and this is what my paper looked like.
I mentioned how pointing out key parts of a passage or key parts of your notes will help you "chunk" all this information into smaller, easier to access compartments in your brain!!

You then had the last couple minutes of class to answer the questions that went along with this Active reading which will be due at the beginning of the period tomorrow.

Cells Crash Course

Friday we watched the Crash Course on Both animal and plant cells.  I had you jotting down main concepts that he mentioned about key terms and we will revisit that as we go to see how these terms all work together.

Well we made it through our first test!!!!!
Last week we finished up the chemical basis of life unit, worked through practice problems on Friday Monday and Tuesday and had our first large exam on Wednesday.  Today we started RIGHT into the next topic which is the Cellular basis of life.  Today's daily questions came directly from one of the first things we learned about the characteristics of life.

Enzyme Notes

Today we got into the notes about enzymes which will explain what happened during yesterdays inquiry lab.

I used the example from yesterday with this - Catalase was the enzyme that broke down Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2)  We saw yesterday how it was Reusable because after it went through one reaction of converting the H2O2 into water and oxygen, it was still available when we added even more H2O2 to the same liver.
Another example that some groups looked at yesterday was Lactose.  Lactose would be the SUBSTRATE and the enzyme that it binds with is called lactase
The place where the substrate binds to the enzyme is known as the active site.
 

Enzyme Intro Lab

Friday we had our daily question quiz to wrap up Organic  Molecules, Monday you worked on Study Island to finish the Keystone Exam Pre-test and then do the Organic Chemistry and Water questions.  Both of those I asked you to answer a minimum of 20 questions.

Tuesday we had our intro enzyme lab!!  This was a pretty messy/stinky lab as we were dealing with liver enzymes!!  Here was the introduction.

Some of the pics from the lab are below:
First we looked at the effects of the enzyme
catalase on the breakdown of Hydrogen Peroxide
in cells.  (see Introduction.)

When liver is placed in the hydrogen peroxide
gas is produced (oxygen that is being released)
what is left would be simply water

We then tested different factors that
effect the rate of enzyme action such as
pH and Temperature.  Some reactions
happened faster than others. 

For instance here you can see how changing the pH
changed how fast the reactions occurred.  In this case the
middle reaction (at a neutral pH) worked the fastest.
